This Week and Homework

Homework
1. Due Tuesday (1/6/15): Students have written down New Year's Resolutions for their work in class. They are supposed to share their goal and the one specific change they intend to make to meet that goal. Have a brief (10-15 minutes) written conversation (note passing) with your child about their resolution. You can share other ideas with them as well.

2. Due Tuesday (1/6/15): Your child needs to come up with an idea for a personal narrative piece. A personal narrative is a small moment that was significant that they can remember a good amount of details about. Sometimes, it helps kids to talk about ideas before they pick one. They just need to get the idea and we will write it in class. They don't even have to write it down, but if it helps them remember it tomorrow they certainly should write it down.

3. Due Monday (1/12/15): The toner in the printer is being replaced tomorrow afternoon, so look for this Tuesday or Wednesday. Your child has a math packet that is 2 pages. Page 1 is estimating products. There is an example problem on it to help with clarifying the work. Page 2 is using the "circles strategy" to answer division problems. For example, if the equation is 40 / 8 = ?, they will draw 8 circles and split the 40 up equally in the circles by drawing tallies. Whatever number is in each circle is the quotient.

(There is no new times table to study for or a spelling list this week.)

This Week
ELA: Reading and researching biographies, cursive, writing personal narratives, 30-minute quick writes.

Math: Division practice and games, fluency practice in multiplication.

History: American Revolution and the creation of democratic government in the United States.

A Look Ahead
Tuesday (1/13/15) your child will take a unit test on the American Revolution and creation of democratic government. They will have a study guide to take home Friday after school they can study from.

Thursday (1/15/15) is the last day of the 2nd nine week period. You will receive a different report card than the one you received in October. More specifics to come when it's time.

Friday (1/16/15) and Monday (1/19/15) are holidays for your children. I will be contactable Friday, but not Monday.

Friday (1/23/15) is our Sandhills library day at 11:30.
