Leave a Comment about Estimating!

We are spending the week estimating products in Math Workshop. We have talked about how estimating is "real-life math", something people do on a daily basis.

If you would take the time to leave a comment about how you use estimating in your life as an adult, we would really appreciate it. Thanks!

  1. I use estimation every day- when I'm shopping for groceries, gifts or clothing- I need to be aware of how much I am spending so I don't over-spend. I also give Will an estimation of how long I will be gone when he and Ty have a sitter. I'm always estimating how long it will take me to go to and from places because I like to be on time!

  2. I use estimating when traveling to see how long the trip will take. Sometimes I use it to plan when I will need to stop for gas. These estimates kept changing during Thanksgiving travel, due to the very congested roads!

  3. I use estimation in my everyday life, going shopping , staying in my budget. Using it for different recipes. When we travel, I estimate the miles or time.

  4. I definitely use estimation every day for different things such as estimating the amount of time to do an activity in PE, I estimate the cost of items at the grocery store so I make sure to stay in my budget and I even estimate how many more miles I can drive when my gas light is on!! haha

  5. I use estimations every time I plan to use my time or my money.
    * like how long it may take me to get somewhere, either in my car or on my bike
    * if I have enough extra money to go out to eat
    * how long chores may take us to do before we can plan a play date or play a game
*how much money I can spend at the grocery store
*how much food to make based on how many people may come to a party

  6. I also estimate things like time and money every day. Here's an example:

The other day, I used a gift card to pay for gas. Before I got gas, there was about $113 on the card (I don't remember how many cents.)

When I left, I forgot to check exactly how much money was left on the card. I estimated that I usually spend about $40 on gas.

So I estimated how much money I had left on the card by rounding and doing $110 - $40 in my head. Now I know that I have enough money left for about two more visits.

  7. I just reread what it is that you guys are working on. I've been estimating some products recently too.

I'm working on planning a big dinner and wanted to figure out if the food I've picked out is too expensive. There are probably going to be about 110 people, and the dessert costs $4.88 per person. I can quickly estimate the ans.... I mean, the PRODUCT by multiplying 100 x 5.

  8. I use estimation when baking, pies, corn bread or simply making pancakes. It keeps me from having to pull out a measuring cup. I also estimate when planning a trip and how much will be needed for food and gas. I've also found that I can estimate how much of my homework I will need to get done daily before the week is over and I have to submit it.

  9. I estimate for the items I select to put in my grocery shopping cart. One item I buy is boxes of applesauce pouches. These are a quick and easy snack Anna and Ella enjoy each day. One box has 12 pouches and if Anna and Ella eat one pouch a day, then the box lasts only six days. If I know I want to have an entire week covered, then I get 2 boxes. We use the extra for friends that may come over or the girls can earn some for extra special treats. It is nice for my wallet (budget) and my time if after the week there are some left over. Things come up and sometimes my grocery store trip does not always happen on days I have planned.

  10. Today I had to buy donut holes and juice for an awards ceremony at a middle school tomorrow. I know there will be 73 kids receiving awards, but I don't know if each kid will bring 1 or 2 parents. Therefore, I had to estimate how many people will be there and decide approximately how much juice and how many boxes of donut holes I needed.

  12. As I was thinking about the ways I use estimation on a daily basis, I realized I probably estimate time more than anything else. I ask myself questions like "How long will it take me to go to Sam's Club and get home again?" "How long will the kids be invested in writing during Writing Workshop before we need to move on to something else? "Will I have enough time to take Bongo for a walk and write down some cool ideas about a lesson I am planning? I guess I estimate other things too. Before I went shopping this weekend, I wrote down my estimation of what the supplies would cost for my kids to all make a pomander ball for their parents for Christmas. I also estimated the number of whole cloves it would take to cover 18 oranges. By the way, it is going to take a lot of cloves to cover 18 oranges. :) Happy estimating. Love, Mrs. Bolte
